Source: Received for review

Publication date: December 18, 2012

Publisher: Harlequin MIRA

Series: Healer #2

Rating: ★★★★☆

Summary from Goodreads.com: As the last Healer in the Fifteen Realms, Avry of Kazan is in a unique position: in the minds of her friends and foes alike, she no longer exists. Despite her need to prevent the megalomanical King Tohon from winning control of the Realms, Avry is also determined to find her sister and repair their estrangement. And she must do it alone, as Kerrick, her partner and sole confident, returns to Alga to summon his country into battle.

Though she should be in hiding, Avry will do whatever she can to support Tohon’s opponents. Including infiltrating a holy army, evading magic sniffers, teaching forest skills to soldiers and figuring out how to stop Tohon’s most horrible creations yet; an army of the walking dead—human and animal alike and nearly impossible to defeat.

War is coming and Avry is alone. Unless she figures out how to do the impossible … again.

First off I just have to let it off my chest that I am not a huge fan of the cover of this book which is disappointing because I normally think Maria V. Snyder gets the most gorgeous book covers.  But that aside I can say that she has yet to disappoint me in any of her fantasy books.  Keep in mind I did truly enjoy this book and cannot wait for the next book despite my comments about the issues I did have with it.

My first disappointment was that some of my favorite characters from Touch of Power were Poppa Bear, the monkeys and Flea were not as present in this book.  There are references made and you get glimpses of some of them but it was lacking that quirky bantering amongst the group that made the previous book so enjoyable.

My second issue with the book was the alternating view points of Avry and Kerrick.  I am ok with the two having to go their separate ways because hey there is a war brewing and they are both important players who need to get things done. My problem was that a lot of Kerrick’s chapters seemed so unnecessary and thrown in just for the sake of having him in the book and adding suspense.  There were so many mini cliffhangers sprinkled through out the book you will be on an emotional roller coaster reading it.  I am glad we see Kerrick but I wish things had tied back into the main storyline more so.

That said those two main issues were what prevented me from giving this 5 stars but I still am in love with the series and with the kick ass heroine, Avry.  The ending just about killed me and had me wanting to scream for book 3!  If you are a fan of Maria’s other fantasy books you definitely want to check out this series.

I agree that Kerrick’s chapters seemed a bit unnecessary but I did like his storyline so I didn’t mind too much.

Hopefully he will have more of a relevant role in the next book. Can you believe that ending?!

I really must get to this series. I started the first book but it expired before I got a chance to finish it!
